The School of Nursing opened on January 27, 1947. At that time, Boston College was a men's college and the nursing program was the first full-time undergraduate program to open to women. The master's program was established in 1958. The school reached a milestone when Ph.D. program was set up in 1988, becoming the first Jesuit university to offer a doctorate in nursing. In 2003, the School of Nursing was named after Boston College alumnus and businessman William F. Connell, whose daughter had graduated from the nursing program.
